South Texas Medical Academic Building
Muñoz & Company designed the South Texas Medical Academic Building for the University of Texas Health Science Center in Edinburg, Texas. This facility is the first medical classroom building on campus and is the vital first step in establishing a new medical school campus in South Texas. The 88,363 SF Academic Building will support collaborative learning through design of flexible classrooms and lecture halls, and will reinforce bi-lingual education. The new Medical Academic Building will feature a state-of-the-future digital anatomy teaching facility.
The strong and simple architecture in the spirit of Louis Kahn and Kenneth Bentsen is one of symbolic and iconic design and pays homage to buildings that are simultaneously spiritual and technical. The physical expression is an important step on the journey to building a new university and medical school that will prepare students for global leadership positions. The architecture focuses on the rich cultural traditions found in the valley and is in context with the campus and the Regional Academic Health Center. Ultimately, the design strengthens the original design vocabulary of the campus and interprets the landscape of South Texas, solidifying the mission and linkage to the Academic Learning and Teaching Center in San Antonio.
