Memorial Branch Library
City of San Antonio

Memorial Branch Library opened May 4, 1981, on land that was originally part of a city park. The organization Communities Organized for Public Service was instrumental in raising funds for the facility. The local community chose to name the facility to honor and remember San Antonio’s service members. The Library underwent a few renovations in terms of upgrading the MEP requirements and site improvements over the years. Alta’s 2021 additions and renovations transformed the building by adding a beautiful transparent modern façade which brings in more natural light and adds visual appeal to the building and main entrance. The new lobby features a memorial wall with the poem, “To You, the Veterans who Died for Us” by Dr. Carmen Tafolla, written for Memorial Library, 2021. In addition to new lobby, the improvements include major enhancement to children’s area, creation of a dedicated teen center, upgrades to the community meeting room and updating furniture and equipment. A new graphic mural at the clear story has transformed the look of the main library area.
